2009 Jim Ackerman Alumnus of the
Year Honoree
As Vice President -
Assistant Superintendent of Economic and Resource Development at the Long
Beach Community College District, Ms. Bynum oversees workforce development;
community education; corporate education and training; federal and state
workforce grants; economic development grants and contracts; and special
resource development projects on behalf of the District. Ms. Bynum has over 25 years of experience
in the public and private sectors linking education and training to business
and industry needs with a focus on developing a well-trained workforce.
The Office of Economic and
Resource Development at Long Beach City College has administered over $75
million in grants and contracts leading to a number of awards for the quality
and successful results of programs offered to individuals as well as to
business and industry. This includes the Long Beach Chamber’s International
Achievement Award, the California Community College System’s award for
Successful Industry Partnerships, the Los Angeles County’s Annual
Productivity Award for Welfare to Work,
the California Association of Occupational Educators award for
Business and Industry Partnerships, and a series of Knight Foundation and
Verizon Foundation awards for faculty development and student support
services.
Ms. Bynum has served as
past chair of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, vice-chair of the Long
Beach Economic Development Commission, and president of the Southern
California International Business Association. She was president of Leadership Long Beach and currently serves
as a member of tit’s Honorary Board of Governors. She also served on the
boards of Gateway Cities Economic Development Partnership, the Public
Corporation for the Arts and the Long Beach Women’s Council, the Advisory
Committee of the Long Beach Conservation Corps, and the board of Long Beach
Inc. She was the Long Beach Mayor’s
appointee on the city-wide Government Reform Task Force.
She currently is on the
Community Hospital of Long Beach Foundation Board, is a community trustee for
Memorial Medical Center, serves on the City of Long Beach Early Childhood
Education Business Advisory Council and is a member of the Southern California
Advisory Council for the Women’s Leadership Exchange. She also serves on the
National Education Advisory Council for the Cyber Innovation Center located
in Louisiana.
Ms. Bynum was selected in
2004 as Woman of the Year by then California State Assembly Member Alan
Lowenthal of the 54th District. And In 2005, she was the
educational appointee of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve on the
Economic Strategy Panel for the State of California. The Panel assists in developing an overall
statewide vision and strategy to guide public policy decisions for economic
growth and competitiveness.
Ms. Bynum earned a
master’s degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and a
bachelor’s degree from CSU Long Beach.
