Youth Leadership FAQs

Who Should Participate?

The program is designed for high school students that live or go to school in Long Beach. Current Freshman and Sophomores are eligible to apply for the following year’s program. A limited number of Seniors will be accepted on a wait list basis.

How Will I Benefit From Participating?

The Youth Leadership Long Beach program is a unique opportunity for area high school students to join with emerging youth leaders from other schools to experience a group-training program based on principled leadership. It empowers youth to accept roles as community trustees and learn the importance of solving the community’s challenges through individual responsibility.

What Topics Are Covered During The Year?

This 8-month program, which meets primarily on Saturdays is focused around personal leadership development and engaging and connecting with local community leaders.

What Is The Program Schedule?

The program begins with a full day Orientation in late September/early October, followed by a mandatory 3-day Leadership Retreat Weekend in Big Bear on a Friday through Sunday.

Following the Retreat, the group meets monthly with most class days falling on a Saturday (approximately 9 am – 4 pm).. The youth will miss two school days – one for the “Government & Public Service” Day at City Hall in December and one for a “Day at the Port” in the Spring.

The youth will also design, plan and implement a class community service project in the Spring. There will be times required outside the monthly sessions for the youth to meet with their classmates to work on the project.

How Do I Learn More About the Youth Leadership Long Beach program?

High school youth are able to apply online through the LLB website.  Beginning in March, Leadership Long Beach will make application information available to school counseling staff.  In addition, the program tries to make presentations during school break times to youth leader clubs on school campuess during the Spring.

What Is The Cost?

There is no charge for the youth to participate in the program. The youth program is generously sponsored by community foundations, Leadership Long Beach alumni and other groups who value the the future leaders of our city. We take care to find students who are passionate and committed to the goals of this program; to improve themselves and Long Beach.
