Community Service Project Day

Community Service Project Day

During the February session with Habitat for Humanity, the 2014 Youth Leadership Long Beach class members spent their time learning about the building opportunities serviced by the nonprofit and their impact on the community.  As part of the day, the youth built wooden benches to be placed at Orizaba Park.

The March session was their Community Service Project Day as the youth went to Orizaba Park to help create the foundation for the community garden and begin some of the landscaping chores for the new park areas.  Orizaba Park is slated to open a new community center building on the site as one focal point for community services and green space in Central Long Beach.  Working hand in hand with park staff and local residents, the youth put together several raised planter beds and delivered them to the new plots in the southern part of the park.  In addition, the youth moved soil for the planters and future landscaping needs for the parkland.
